Tarot reading is a form of divination that dates back to the fifteenth century in Europe. Recently, tarot reading has become popular among neopagan and the occult, and since the turn of the 21st century and the digital age, an explosion of self-published tarot decks have become available to mainstream audiences.
The Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck was created in 1909 and it has set a precedent in format, style, and symbolism influencing many modern deck variations on the market today. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck incorporates numerology, archetypal imagery, and symbolism that can be traced back through western civilization mythology. A traditional tarot deck is made up of 78 cards, which include 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana (or pip) cards. The major arcana includes 22 key stages of the Fool’s Journey, starting at 0-Fool card, and ending at 21-World card. The minor arcana cards are subdivided into four suits: wands, swords, cups, and pentacles, representing the natural elements: fire, air, water, earth. Each suit has an Ace card followed by cards 2-9, and four court cards: page, knight, queen, and king.

In a traditional tarot reading, the reader shuffles the deck and arranges cards into a spread to provide clarity to the client’s question. A common three-card tarot spread addresses the past, present, and future events relative to the client’s question.
