Once again, the seasons shift. We turn another notch around the great wheel of the year, moving deeper into fall—on the precipice of the dark months in the Northern Hemisphere. The air feels heavier with precipitation, thick with mist and memory, and more introspective. The leaves, once brilliant in their autumnal flare, have begun to dry and drop to the ground, creating a carpet of decay and potential.
But in tarot, Death does not mean an ending so much as it means transformation—a time to compost.
We are in it.
Scorpio Season.
The time of Death.
The Death Card and the Art of Composting
In the Tarot, the Death card, the thirteenth key of the Major Arcana, reminds us of life’s inescapable truth—death comes for all, yet within it lies the promise of renewal. It’s not about destruction for destruction’s sake, but about making fertile soil from what has expired. It’s the sacred rot that feeds future growth.
Rachel Pollack wrote in her book Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, “Without death to clear away the old, nothing new could find its place in the world. . . . If we can accept death, we are able to live more fully.”
This idea of composting is woven throughout the tarot. Death creates the rich ground upon which The Empress (III) easily tends her fields—symbol of life, fertility, and abundance. Even the The Fool (0) which marks a whole new cycle, once again, stepping forward in innocence and purity, ready to begin anew.
Notice in the tarot card image below, how often the color white appears in these cards—Death’s horse and flower in the flag, the Queen of Cups’ gown, the child’s gloves and flowers in the Six of Cups, even the shroud in the Seven of Cups. White represents purity, protection, and the sacred feminine energy of renewal. It’s the clean slate that follows surrender.

Scorpio: Fixed Water, Deep Transformation
Scorpio is ruled by both the Death Card and the Queen of Cups—the fixed water energy that feels everything deeply. Scorpio’s waters are transformative, not still. They invite us to dive below the surface, to face our shadows, to feel grief and shame, and ultimately, to release them.
Scorpio governs three decans, each represented by a Minor Arcana card in the suit of Cups—the Five, Six, and Seven of Cups. Together, they tell a story of emotional transformation:
- Five of Cups (October 23 – November 2): The cloak of grief. The figure mourns spilled cups, unable yet to turn toward what remains. This card speaks to the shame that can linger in grief, and the courage needed to cross the bridge into new life.
- Six of Cups (November 3 – November 12): Nostalgia and innocence. A child gives another child a cup with a white flower—a tender memory of love and simplicity. Yet even this sweetness can become stagnant if we cling to it. Gratitude for what was, allows us to live in what is.
- Seven of Cups (November 13 – November 22): The realm of illusion and choice. Seven cups hover in the air, filled with temptations, dreams, and fears. Here, we face the confusion that precedes change. To choose one path often means letting the others die. It’s the necessary death of fantasy and desire in favor of grounded reality.
These cards remind us that emotional evolution requires release. To grow, we must let go.
A Season to Compost
This Scorpio season is particularly potent with so many planets in water signs. Both Neptune and Saturn are finishing their journey through Pisces, preparing to move forward and eventually enter fiery Aries in early 2026. We are standing at the threshold—moving from Water to Fire, from dissolution to ignition.
Numerologically, 2025 is a 9 year —the final number in the cycle. The energy of the 9 year is one of completion, mastery, and release. It’s the perfect moment to clear the field, to compost the old growth that has served its purpose. Next year, 2026 becomes a 1 year, symbolizing beginnings, rebirth, and a brand-new cycle.
We are collectively experiencing this pivotal stage, and now is the time to compost your false realities, your outdated dreams, your ancestral pain.
Let the emotional waters cleanse what no longer serves your evolution.
Allow grief to move through you, not as punishment, but as purification.
This is an ideal time for energetic and spiritual work—Shamanic Healing, Reiki, dreamwork, and meditation that focus on release, rebalancing, and soul-level renewal. Scorpio season doesn’t ask for perfection; it asks for honesty and depth. Support yourself by drinking clean and pure water, spend time in nature—preferably by natural water sources, and take soothing salt baths to replenish your energy field.
What are you ready to let die, so that something truer can live?
Living Fully Through Death
The Death card reminds us that every ending is simply a passage into a new beginning. Like fallen leaves returning to the soil, our own griefs, fears, and outdated stories can become nourishment for what’s yet to grow. When we release what has run its course, we create space for something more aligned and alive to take root.
This Scorpio season invites us to embrace that truth. As the days darken and turns inward, trust the wisdom of decay. What seems to be falling away is actually transforming, preparing you for renewal.
