Spirit Message from Downy Woodpecker

A couple of days ago I heard a loud knocking coming from my living room. The sound was quite loud, it echoed through the whole apartment. At first, I thought it was the upstairs neighbor making a ruckus. However, it was evident the sound was not from above, but rather, outside my front window. My curiosity led me to peer outside, and sure enough, the knocking was no other than a Downy Woodpecker pecking away near the window jamb. The sound, a wonderful strong staccato beat, reverberated through my apartment for a good five minutes before it flew off. I caught a good glimpse of it, the woodpecker was female, determined by the markings, she was without the distinct red mark on her head.

I pondered, what kind of message is spirit telling me?

It wasn’t evident in that moment, but the next day I received some motivating messages in my inbox. I believe the woodpecker was a sign, notifying me about these important messages. The woodpecker was calling me to pay attention, to wake up from my hibernation and two-year seclusion. It was also a call to help my community. Groups and people will be knocking and messaging me for help, using my skills in both design-build and architecture, as well as shamanic healing and divination. Opportunities are coming, pay attention and answer the calls.

The Downy Woodpecker is one of the more common woodpeckers of Minnesota, but I was surprised to see it in my urban neighborhood, up close, right outside my apartment window. Also, it’s not often you get to hear the sound of a woodpecker inside your home, like a fast amplified drumbeat, multidimensional, hollow and deep. It was refreshing, joyful, and very memorable. I felt honored to have the natural sound reverb through my apartment for that moment, connecting me back to nature, and my purpose, to engage in community and rsvp to the spirit messages grabbing hold of my attention.
